Beyond the Brush: Caring for the Whole Child
This month, Kids In Need of McHenry County was honored to cohost Beyond the Brush alongside CASA, ICOY, and Representative Suzanne Ness. It was a day filled with connection, education, and care — and one that reminded us how powerful it can be when community comes together to meet real needs.
Families who attended received more than just haircuts and styling. They experienced a sense of dignity, joy, and belonging. For many of the children, sitting in the chair and having their hair cared for in a way that celebrated their identity was something new. For parents and caregivers, it was a chance to learn how to nurture their children’s hair and skin in ways that affirm who they are.
The event included guidance and education for parents on the importance of proper hair and skin care for children of color. Too often, caregivers are left without resources, unsure which products to use or how to support their children’s unique needs. By having professionals on hand to answer questions, demonstrate techniques, and even walk families through selecting the right products, this event helped fill a gap that has existed for far too long.
This is about more than hair and skin. It is about identity, confidence, and cultural pride. When children feel seen and cared for in these deeply personal ways, it builds trust and strengthens their sense of self. And when parents feel equipped and supported, the whole family thrives.
Beyond the Brush is exactly the kind of service that McHenry County needs more of. It is practical, it is meaningful, and it leaves a lasting impact. We are proud and humbled to have been part of it.
