Volunteers are a vital part of everything we do.
Their time, compassion, and willingness to show up make it possible for us to serve children and families across our community. From organizing essential items and delivering crucial resources to supporting programs and assisting at events, volunteers help turn small acts into meaningful impact. Because of our volunteers, more children feel seen, supported, and equipped to thrive.

Delivery Drivers

Delivery drivers play a crucial role in helping us get essential items to the children and families who need them most. Volunteers pick up and deliver supplies to new foster placements, families without transportation, and partner organizations throughout McHenry County. This role helps ensure that critical resources reach families quickly and with care.

Donation Center

Donation Center volunteers help ensure donated items are ready to reach the children and families we serve. Volunteers sort through incoming clothing and other donated goods, organize items by size and type, and help keep the space orderly and welcoming.

The Bridge/Free Store

Back of store volunteers prepare items by tagging, hanging, and restocking clothing and essentials so the store stays organized and ready for guests. Front of store volunteers assist families while they shop, help them find what they need, and support the checkout process. Together, these volunteers help ensure every guest feels respected, supported, and cared for.

Community Engagement

The Community Engagement Team helps spread the word about Kids In Need throughout the community. Volunteers may represent KIN at tabling events, connect with local businesses about hosting donation drives, pick up completed drives, distribute flyers, and help share information about our programs and impact. Team members can choose the activities that best fit their interests and availability, so there is truly something for everyone. This team plays a critical role in helping more people learn about our mission and how they can support children and families in our community.

Special Events

Special Events volunteers help bring our community events to life. Opportunities range from assisting with event planning and preparation to helping with setup, activities, and support on the day of the event. Whether behind the scenes or welcoming guests, these volunteers play an important role in creating meaningful experiences that support our mission and bring the community together.

Group Volunteering

We do not often have opportunities for groups to volunteer directly at our facility, but occasional projects are available throughout the year. Groups from clubs, schools, and troops who are interested in helping are encouraged to reach out. Please contact Michelle Salzman to discuss ways kids can help kids and support children in our community.
